Finding the Balance

"Work-Life Balance"  It's a term that Working Mother's hear all too often.  Some WMs who have navigated the executive career path tell will tell you that there is no such thing, and perhaps there isn't.  But I am determined to make "it" work...determined to prove that you can eliminate the guilt, be a fabulous mama, a wonderful wife, have a career, and have a bit of time to spare just for YOU!

A few months ago, I realized that those executive moms were probably right about "no balance"; it's more of a prioritization and I had a bit of an 'ah-ha' moment.  Being the typical nerdy mom that I am...I found that a simple equation helps me maintain and prioritize all of my roles

I wear many hats in my life, but for this example we will consider just two:

  • Home - Represents all of my responsibilities at home (cooking, cleaning, laundry - ugh)
  • Work - Represents all of my responsibilities at work
At any given time, in order to maintain balance Home + Work = 0

Huh?  What does this mean?  Well, if work is demanding for a certain period of time, you can't be in full gear at home at the same time - you can't work overtime, come home and cook, clean, pick up from daycare, etc.  Something has to give.

For example, I had an important customer meeting a few months ago.  I knew that I needed to be at work by 6:30 am, meetings were scheduled from 8:00 - 5:30 and I probably wouldn't make it home until at least 7:00 pm.  To help me calibrate my priorities, I used the equation as follows:

Home + Work = 0
(   -   ) +  (  +  )  = 0

Essentially, I knew that during those two days, I needed to focus 100% of my energy on work (hence the plus sign under Work, and the negative signs under Home).  To help, I made sure that I relied on my main man - I sent my husband a meeting notice...a meeting notice for drop off and pick up at daycare :) And, I let him know that for those two days, he was Mr. Mom - including everything that goes with it.

As I sit here and ponder, I realize that I am juggling many balls right now:
Wife, Mom, CEO of the House (bills, laundry, cooking), Philly SWE VP of Professional Development, Blogger Mama, Runner, Knitter

While I can't be in 100% full gear for every role (hence why its been 20 days since my last post), I can make an attempt to determine what is my highest priority at the moment and go from there!

Happy 4th of July!

It is amazing at how much you learn by being a Mother.  I captured the photo below at a 4th of July parade in a neighboring town, and it really made me realize how fortunate we are to be FREE!

Happy 4th of July to all!  A big thank you to those that serve our country and fight for our freedom every day!
